ISO 16949

ISO TS 16949 for Automotive Industry
ISO TS 16949 is the only quality management system standard available in the world, which has been established and controlled by International Automotive Task Force (IATF)
the members of IATF includes; ISO TS 16949 is the prerequisite to supply parts or material to most of the OEMs and TIER 1 suppliers in North America, it has also been adopted very rapidly in other parts of the world. TS 16949 was basically derived from QS 9000.

QS 9000 was the first ever comprehensive quality management standard in the filed of automotive industry. This was established by FORD, CHRYSLER and GENERAL MOTORS in 1994. The basic standard was ISO 9001:1994 version and the specific requirements of automotive industry were added.

QS 9000 got overwhelming response around the world and more than 25,000 companies got the certification in a short period of time. This success leads to establishment of a comprehensive International standard for automotive industry and in year 1999 first edition of ISO TS 16949 was published and it was  revised in year 2002 and it was finally decided that TS 16949 will replace QS 9000 by end of 2006.

Apart from ISO 9001, six fundamental requirements are included in ISO TS 16949 which are;

  • Advance Product quality planning and control plans
  • Failure Mode and Effect Analysis.
  • Statistical Process Control.
  • Measurement system Analysis.
  • Production part approval process.
  • Business Planning.


Many other OEMS has also established their supplier development plan based upon the guidance and requirements of  ISO TS 16949, however they are being used with
different titles.
